China Harbor not approached to build new Demerara Harbour bridge – Nov 8th 2012
The Government of Guyana has not approached China Harbour with a view to contracting them to build a new bridge over the Demerara River. This is according to Minister of Works, Robeson Benn.
Following the collapse of a section of the 33-year-old Demerara Harbour Bridge, there have been renewed calls for a new more permanent structure to replace it. Minister Benn confirmed that there have been expressions of interest in such a project.
The Demerara Harbour Bridge which is supported by pontoons was opened in 1978 and had an estimated lifespan of 20-25 years with proper maintenance.
