Relocation plans being discussed as contract signing date draws near
Within the next two weeks, the contract will be signed for the Cheddi Jagan International Airport expansion and the squatters will be relocated.
Speaking to the media on Monday, Transport Minister, Robeson Benn, said, the funding has been approved for the project.
Benn said, that Government is having dialogue with the squatters. He believes it could be amicably done if reasonable approaches are taken.
Some of the squatters have been occupying the area for decades and have put up permanent structures. They told Capitol News that they are willing to move but must be adequately compensated.
On the claims that most of the squatters have been living in the area for decades, Minister Benn stated, the figures and historical photographs from the Ministry do not indicate that this is so.
The Government of Guyana approved a US$138M design and construction contract with Chinese Harbour Engineering Company for a project expected to include an extension of the airport runway to a total of 10,800 feet.
