Prominent Attorney-at-Law, Vic Puran dies in vehicular accident

Prominent Attorney-at-Law, Vic Puran, was discovered dead this morning, pinned down in his vehicle, in a canal at Mahaicony, on the East Coast of Demerara and police sources say it appears as though the attorney may have lost control of his vehicle on the lonely road and it plunged into the canal. They suspect no foul play at this stage. Puran had a farm in the area, just over 100 yards from the scene of the apparent accident and it is believed that he was heading to the farm. The accident is believed to have taken place sometime last night. Sources close to relatives say Puran left home and after they could not make contact with him they alerted the police but were told that 24 hours would have to elapse before a missing persons report could be filed.

The discovery was made just before 7 this morning according to a relative.

Puran was a very well known attorney especially in the criminal law area. He had a number of high profile clients in the past including Convicted drug kingpin, Roger Khan, who is serving time in a US jail and Khan associate Ricardo Rodrigues who was gunned down yesterday.

Puran had travelled to the US to appear in the New York court on behalf of both Khan and Rodrigues.

He also served as an attorney for Barry Dataram who is wanted in the US on drug charges and who US authorities have been trying to extradite.

He also served recently as a special prosecutor for the Government in a recent treason case. That case was thrown out by the Magistrate’s Court.

Vic Puran was one of the lawyers sitting in at the Linden Commission of Inquiry hearing and was at the Commission hearing up to yesterday afternoon. This morning the commission offered a moment’s silence in his memory.
