Government is making a mockery of the issue of corporal punishment – Opposition Leader, David Granger
Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, has been holding a series of meetings dealing with the controversial issue of corporal punishment in schools. So far, there has been mixed reactions by parents and teachers with almost the same number voting to maintaining corporal punishment as those wanting to ban. But Opposition Leader, David Granger, said, that the Government is making a mockery of the issue since it has signed onto an international treaty against the use of corporal punishment in schools.
Granger said, he and his household does not believe in corporal punishment and that the consultations should have taken place before signing on to the treaty.
The use of Corporal punishment has been restricted in schools with only senior teachers such as Heads and their Deputies allowed to administer it.
