Agriculture Minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy plans to tackle piracy
Guyana’s Agriculture Minister, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, has been talking about his administration’s plans to tackle piracy. He said one of the initiatives is to use the GPS monitoring system that is already being used by trawlers and vessels, but having fishermen buy into the system is not easy. He said the individual device must be an investment by the fishermen.
Come next year the Government is hoping to set up a Central Monitoring Unit. It is expected that the unit can easily locate the boats in case of crisis.
For years fishermen have been calling for protection on the high seas as they ply their trade. In some cases the fishermen are left at the mercy of the pirates.
