Guyana to get international help to finalize National Policy and Strategic Plan for Inland fisheries
Guyana is getting some international help to finalize the draft National Policy and Strategic Plan for Inland fisheries in Guyana.
At a workshop at the Ocean View International Hotel, Dr. Lystra Fletcher-Paul, FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture representative said, that it cannot be business as usual in the sector. She said, it is important that we learn from the past.
Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, said, that Guyana has an organized industry with many weaknesses. The Minister noted that those weaknesses limit the potential of the industry.
According to Dr. Ramsammy, the fishing sector contribute just around 3% to our GDP a figure he feels can be enhanced.
The Minister applauded the partnership that has been developing between Guyana and other key stakeholders in the fishing Industry. He spoke of the gain research support can bring through partnership.
