President of the GTUC blames the Government for allowing the problems at Rusal to escalate
President of the GTUC, Norris Witter, is blaming the government for allowing the problems at Rusal to escalate. And in this, the third year of the conflict, the union said that the government is more about a win or lose situation, rather than looking after the best interest of the workers.
The Guyana Bauxite Company Incorporated, a subsidiary of Rusal and Guyana Bauxite and General Workers Union, are at odds over several issues which include the dismissal of 87 employees, the unsettled issue of wages and salary and the assault of one of the workers by a manager of the company.
Just recently the Minister of Labour, Nanda Gopaul, intervened in the matter and appointed Francis Carrol as an arbiter. It was at that stage the company moved to the courts and had an injunction granted on the grounds that the proper procedures were not followed.
The Government has shares in the bauxite company.
