Health Officials confirm that Guyana is free of Foot and Mouth Disease.
Two health officials have confirmed that Guyana is free of Foot and Mouth Disease. Dr. Shamdeo Persaud, who is the Chief Medical Officer in the Ministry of Health, said that Guyana continues to monitor the disease.
Foot and Mouth Disease is an infectious and sometimes fatal viral disease that affects domestic animals like cows, horses, goats and pigs. The virus carries a high fever for a number of days and some visible effects are blisters in the mouth and feet. According to Dr. Zoila Fletcher-Payton of PAHO, Guyana has been free since 2001 and there are efforts currently underway to ensure the country remains free of Foot and Mouth Disease.
The World Health Organisation (WHO), is the body that declared Guyana free of the Foot and Mouth disease in 2001.
