Blairmont Sugar Estate closes as protests by factory workers reaches third day

Today is the third day since factory workers of the Blairmont  Sugar estate are off the job over their job evaluations. The Guyana Sugar Corporation  is saying that as a result of the industrial action they are forced to close down the estate with immediate effect.

The company is claiming that they are losing millions as a result of the industrial action. In fact the sugar corporation is reporting that 485 punts of cane were destroyed as a result of the strike. GAWU is saying that the factory is not grinding so there are no punts for the harvesters to load.

The company and the union are expected to meet to address the issue and the union is hoping for a speedy resolution.

Some of the workers queries were addressed and payments will be made by Friday.
