Hits and Jams calls off cricket tournament. Goodwill swimming championships to be host in Guyana

Cricket fans will not be able to enjoy any fireworks from Gayle, Pollard, Bravo, Narine and Chanderpaul and company after the WICB  threatened that they will face sanctions if they take part in the masters 20/20 Jamzone cricket match. The HJ promotions group  on Tuesday afternoon called off the game which was scheduled for the Providence Stadium.

That match had been hyped up for several weeks now on radio and television but the organizers  reportedly failed to get the necessary sanction from the WICB for the match.

Cricket fans have expressed disappointment with the decision  to call off the match with Tourism Minister Irfaan alli saying that he is not surprised by the stance taken by the WICB.

The government has installed an IMC to oversee the affairs of cricket after a spectacular fallout that saw various factions on the now disbanded board battling each other for control of the Administration.

Over the past year there have been several series in the Caribbean with Guyana being bypassed for any matches.

The Goodwill Swimming Championships due to start in two days time in Guyana is getting substantial support from telephone company Digicel.  Digicel and GASA to announce its support for the Championships which include Trinidad, Suriname and Barbados.

Digicel’s sponsorship Manager Gavin also pledged Digicel’s continued support for swimming  saying that his company recognizes the value  of the development of the sport here. GASA Secretary Dee George thanked Digicel for their support wand spoke of some of the adjustments that they made to accommodate the holding of the meet.

George also said that Trinidad is the only territory that will be fielding a full strength squad of 40 swimmers with Suriname sending 36, Barbados 31 and Guyana only 27. She expects however that Guyana will still do well.

The Lusignan Golf club has added another Major event to its calendar with the launch on Tuesday of the Inaugural Presidents Cup Golf Tournament. The one day event is a stroke play event which means the person  that ends up taking the least number of strokes in 18 holes minus their  handicap, wins the tournament.

The event under the patronage of president Donald Ramotar is expected to boost the fledgling tourist industry in Guyana.

Play begins at 9:30 in the morning and several other  prizes will be contested all day long.
