Tragic accident at the Lake Mainstay Regatta on Sunday left seasoned boat racer Orin Belle dead

A tragic accident at the Lake Mainstay Regatta on Sunday left seasoned boat racer Orin Belle dead and has echoed calls for there to be better medical facilities available at these speed boat races. The accident occurred during one of the races as one of the boats was trying to over take another during a race.

At first, patrons didn’t realise how bad the accident was. When they eventually got to the man and pulled his boat in, he was badly injured with cuts about his body and his head. Injuries believed to have been sustained from the propeller of the other boat coming into contact with him during the accident. The man was rushed to the hospital in the back of a pick up. He was eventually pronounced dead. There was no ambulance at the scene and it is unclear whether there was even the presence of any certified medical official. The tragedy at lake mainstay brought an end to the day’s regatta event.

Those boats must have safety bars to prevent this happening again. Safety should be a priority. Propellers should have shrouds and skim beams. My condolences to the Belle family.
Safety first should be all racer’s motto!
