Former Commissioner of Police Laurie Lewis has died after a prolonged period of illness.

Former Police Commissioner Laurie Lewis died this afternoon Monday at his Bachelors Adventure, East Coast Demerara home. Lewis was ailing for some time and was in and out of the hospital with complications over the last few months.

Lewis retired from the Guyana Police Force in 2001, ending 11 years as top cop and 40 years of service to that Disciplined Service. He headed units such as the Special branch and once served as the Assistant Director General of the Guyana National Service.

An old student of Queens College and the University of Guyana, Lewis headed the QC Old Students Association and was active in the UG Guild of Graduates.  He was 71.
