Policeman and pregnant woman killed in road accident

A police sergeant and a pregnant woman were among three persons killed in an early morning accident at Friendship on the east bank Demerara.

Reports surrounding the incident are still unclear but eyewitnesses are reporting that the vehicle driven by policeman Shurland Thomas toppled a few times before landing in this canal. All three persons died after being trapped in the vehicle, which by all accounts was submerged for some time before help arrived.

Thomas who is based at Eve Leary reportedly left his Supply east Bank Demerara home just around 6:00, according to his wife. On his way down he offered his neighbors Jason and Temica Brummell a ride to the city, it was raining at the time of the accident . The policeman’s wife Nickisha Thomas told reports that the death of her husband was a big blow to her family. The couple only got married last month.

At the Brummell’s home in Supply Rudolph Brummell father of the deceased said he is still struggling to come to terms with the death of his children. He told reporters that his daughter Temica was expected to give birth to her 2nd child next month.

Recently the traffic department commenced a series of campaigns  to curb the reckless use of the roads by some road users.
