Judge grants an interim injunction against Digicel
The Telecommunications service providers GTT and Digicel are in court again this time over the rates advertised by Digicel.
GTT obtained an interim injunction this afternoon restraining Digicel from advertising, covering, running or operating an international call service other than through interconnection with GTT or without first obtaining a license to do so under the Telecommunications Act of 1990.
Justice Dawn Gregory Barnes also granted an injunction restraining Digicel from fixing, advertising, changing or collecting other rates without obtaining the approval of the Public Utilities Commission after a public hearing.
Digicel on the other line is signaling that it aggressively and vigorously defend any attempt through the courts from ensuring that Guyanese enjoy lower international rates for call. Digicel is maintaining that GTT, by what Digicel call a monopoly on voice and data, is preventing the consumer from accessing cheaper international rates.
