The Guyana Police Force comes under heavy criticism once more
The Guyana Police Force is once again coming under fire for moving into selected communities, arresting young men and throwing them into the lock ups for long periods without ever laying charges against them. On Thursday and Friday a number of young men from the Sophia area were taken into custody and locked up at the Brickdam station for no apparent reason according to some of their relatives.
On Friday a number of women went down to the Brickdam lock ups for information about their sons and husbands who were arrested and taken into custody.
The police over the years has come under severe criticism from abusing that 72hr policy which allows them to hold persons in custody for up to 72 hrs without ever charging them.
Some attorneys have complained bitterly about the practice saying the rights of citizens are being trampled upon especially since they are arrested, booked on trumped up offences but never charged, would just be released 72 hrs later after being photographed and finger printed.
