APNU on local government election

The Donald Ramotar Administration’s decision to dismantle several Neighbourhood Democratic Councils and replace them with Interim Management Councils (IMC’s) and the delay in Local Government elections are coming under heavy criticism by the opposition.

A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) believes the administration is threading on very dangerous grounds since the ruling party seems to be ignoring its legislative obligation to citizens.
APNU is now calling on the administration to do the right thing and recommit to instituting a reform of the local government system, in keeping with the recommendations of the 2001 joint Task Force to hold local government elections without delay.
The Party said the time for Local Government Elections is long overdue and they hoping that the election can be held before year end which could bring an end to some of the problems at the various councils.
