Caricom Report on 33rd Meeting of Caricom Heads of Government in St Lucia
Caricom is not in crisis and the Caricom single market and economy initiative is not all that represents integration in the region. That’s the view of Secretary General of Caricom, Ambassador Irwin Laroque as he opened the 33rd Meeting of Caricom Heads of Government here in St Lucia. Laroque is adamant that integration in the region cannot be ignored but the other accomplishments of the regional body must of be sidelined.
Laroque who took over the reigns as Caricom Secretary General in August of last year has been trying to take a ,ore hands on approach of matters that directly impact on the people of the region.
President Donald Ramotar told the meeting that integration in the region should not be ignored since caricom’s survival depends on it. Guyana he said remains committed to all that Caricom stands for.
New Chairman of Caricom, St Lucia’s Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony said Caricom leaders need to talk with each other. They must take time to share their dreams for the region.
While foreign relations and international affairs are the key issues to be discussed, some regional heads have pointed out that the matter of security is also one that must be discussed for the region.
