33rd annual Caricom Meeting commences July 4th 2012 in St. Lucia.
Taxi Driver Sylvester Bowers sits and plays his guitar just outside the Sandals Grande Resort in St. Lucia, the venue of the 33rd Regular Meeting of the Conference of Caricom Heads of Government. The meeting begins on Wednesday but Sylvester is already worried about whether this meeting will really bring the people of the Caribbean together.
Sylvester believes Caricom states need to be more open. He is the product of a St. Lucian mother and a Barbadian father. His grandfather worked for years in Guyana and so like many other citizens of the region he believes there is a connection in almost everyone that cannot and should not be denied.
This year’s Caricom Heads of Government Meetings is expected to focus more on bringing the region closer while focusing on foreign relations. With Caricom still to get over that daming report on its performance by a group of a regional Experts, now might be the right time for the regional body to double up its efforts at integration.
