Some residents of the Kingston community are counting their losses after their homes were flooded out this morning. Flood waters began rushing in just before the crack of dawn as the Koker doors in the area were left open, thereby allowing water from the nearby Demerara river to flow in.
Initial reports state that the attendant was under the influence of alcohol and may have fallen asleep on the job. Within minutes the community was under water as the high tide came in.
Residents said they were all taken by surprise.
One woman said she believes the time has come for a proper system to be put in place to better manage the Koker system.
The high water in the Kingston community even made it difficult for workers of the Local Government Ministry and businesses to gain access to their buildings. Eventually the flood waters receded. residents now want compensation.
