NAPS to expand HIV prevention
With the increase in mining activities in the hinterland regions the National AIDS programme Secretariat will soon expand its HIV prevention programme targeting those outline areas.
Speaking to Capitol News, NAPS Programme Manger, Dr. Shanti Singh said with the expansion of the industry there is likely to be an increase in prostitution.
The Secretariat is in the process of developing another 5year national HIV strategic plan. Today at the Recency Suite in Georgetown the second draft of the 2012 to 2020 plan was reviewed by stakeholders with attention on stigma and discrimination along with the at risk populations.
Dr. Singh said that stigma and discrimination is a difficult issue to deal with but believes that must be solved at various levels
According to NAPS there is a steady decline in the number of new reported cases of HIV infection since between last year and 2010 only 972 new cases were recorded.
