The Russian Embassy in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport held a chalk drawing competition as part of International Child Protection Day. The competition was opened to 60 students from Georgetown and Kwakwani.
Under the theme may there always be sunshine; Russian Ambassador Nikolay Smirnov said the event creates an opportunity for children to express themselves.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony said the protection of children is important since they are seen as the future of society. Dr. Anthony said while there may be laws to protect children Guyana is now in the process of putting in place the necessary institutions in place to enforce the laws.
International Child Protection Day is aimed at reminding persons of the need to observe and respect the rights of children as an invaluable part of society.
