Education Minister denies making controversial statement

Education Minister Priya Manickchand is fighting back following a report in the kaieteur news on Thursday which quoted the minister as saying teachers who do not like their salaries should quit. Kaieteur News offered a clarification today as the minister said she was taken out of context.

Manickchand said she comes from a family of teachers and is always concerned about the welfare of the nation’s teachers.

The minister last week visited a number of schools as she launched nationwide consultations on the automatic promotion initiative that was the brainchild of the last education minister. That programme has not received much support since its launch.
But today both the APNU and the AFC expressed some concern over the statement even if it was taken out of context.
