World No Tobacco Day
As Guyana joins the rest of the world in observing World No Tobacco Day the Ministries of Health and Education have found that one in every five students would have utilized some form of tobacco.
According to Director of the Health Ministry’s Adolescent Health and Wellness Unit Dr. Marcia Paltoo a survey was conducted in several schools which revealed the finding. Dr. Paltoo said the survey targeted students between the ages of 13 to 15.
In keeping with this year’s observance the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Health Ministry launched a Healthy Workplace Programme which will see employees being encouraged to practice healthy eating habits.
The World Health Organisation has reported that tobacco use is one of the biggest public health threats worldwide and is responsible for nearly 6 million deaths which include non smokers and second hand smokers.
Tobacco industry interference is the theme of this year’s World No Tobacco Day and focuses on the need to expose and counter the tobacco industry’s attempts to undermine global tobacco control efforts.
