GTUC wants parliament to decide on reconstitution of ERC
While recognizing the critical role of the Ethnic relations commission theGuyanatrade union congress is calling for the reconstitution of the body and for the violation of the constitution to be brought to an end. GTUC president Norris Witter at the union’s press conference today did not spare the former chairman , after he challenged the public to show evidence that the commission under his leadership was not operating independently.
The life of the ERC ended in August of 2007 and Lincoln Lewis general secretary of the GTUC said that the ERC is not in conformity with the constitution and laws and is spending scarce tax payers money to carry out un-constitutional activities.
The Budget of the ERC was cut to a dollar and the junior finance minister bishop Juan Edghill said that the workers will be sent on the breadline after the administration was unable to pay salaries for this month.
