GAWU wants reform of GUYSUCO
The Guyana agriculture and general workers union is calling for the reform of the sugar industry and believe it needs to be revolutionary. The disclosure was made by president of the union Komal Chand in an interview with this news cast. Chand said by now the government should realize that the corporation is making the same mistakes over and over while leveling the blame at the feet of the union, the workers and bad weather for the repeated failure to meet its projected target.
Over the past week estates across the country took industrial action over the holiday with pay incentive that the industry said they will be paying on the 8th of next month.
Chand believes that the core problems of the industry are not being addressed and pointed to the shortage of adequate cane and the problems at the factories as two key issues. he said that the prices for sugar on the world market are far better than five years ago.
And the union boss also reacted to his critics within the labour union who believe that GAWU is not giving adequate representation.
Sugar has been on the decline since the implementation of the European’s union 36% price cut.
