Operation El Dorado to crack down on illegal mining and regularising the sector

Operation El Dorado to crack down on illegal mining and regularising the sector
With the government realising the potential of the mining sector the Natural Resources Ministry and the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission will once more conduct its Operation El Dorado as a way of cracking down on illegal mining and regularising the sector.
Subject Minister Robert Persaud said the operation is not a onetime initiative and the time has come for the sector to be properly managed. He was at the time addressing miners in the Mahdia community during this week.
Persaud said the operation is aimed at ensuring that the lands are protected and shared equally since mining plays a major contribution to land destruction if not managed properly.
The last operation saw 94 foreign miners breaching the mining, environment and in some cases even the immigration laws since their visas would have expired or no work permit. In addition some 32 local miners were found guilty of breaching the mining regulations.
