Guyanese government swears in new cabinet members
The new cabinet is in place and President Donald Ramotar wants them to get down to work immediately indicating that he has confidence in the new team which has some old faces.
Prime Minister Samuel Hinds today took the oath of office as prime minister for record 5th time, heading into his 20th year as this country’s Prime Minister.
There are 5 new faces in the cabinet. Promising to bring a new style and greater consultation, Anil Nandalall is the new Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs.
Former region 2 chairman ali baksh is now the minister in the ministry of Agriculture, Nanda Gopaul who served as the Permanent Secretary in the office of the President under the Jagdeo administration now moves into the Labour Ministry as its Minister. He is also a former trade unionist. Ganga Persaud who once served as the permanent secretary for the education ministry is the new minister of local government And Bishop Juan Edghill who recently resigned his position as Chairman of the Ethnic Relations Commission has been appointed as the new Minister within the Ministry of Finance, he said he brings management and organization skills to that ministry and does not believe his new job will affect his ministry in the word of God.
Some ministers have been returned to the cabinet and their old portfolios. Clement Rohee remains as Minister of Home Affairs, Ashni Singh holds onto the Finance Ministry, Carolyn Rodrigues Birkett will continue as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Pauline Sukhai stays put with the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, Dr Frank Anthony will continue to monitor the affairs of youth sports and culture, Dr Jennifer Westford will continue to hold on to the Ministry of Public Service and Robeson Benn will hammer his way with the Public Works portfolio.
Then there are those who have been placed on a different shelf in the Cabinet. Priya Manickchand moves into the Education Ministry from human services.
Former Minister within the Ministry of Finance Jennifer Webster moves up and takes over the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security And former Health Minister Dr Leslie Ramsammy moves on from protection and prevention to grow more as the country’s new Agriculture Minister.
A new ministry has been developed, the ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment, it is being headed by Robert Persaud as the minister. He has moved on from the Agriculture ministry.
Surprisingly, there is no Minister of Tourism Industry and Commerce, the President said that is still in the works.
The President was sworn into office on Saturday promising to work closer with the opposition. For the first time, Guyana has a minority government. The combined opposition APNU and AFC have picked up more seats that the ruling party in the national assembly. That could set the stage for more compromise.
