GPL Dismissing and Rehiring Private Contractors to Weaken Union’s Representation
The dismissal and rehiring of workers as private contractors by GPL is seen as a move the workers representative NACCIE believes the company is using to weaken the union’s representation.
In an interview with Capitol News Kenneth Joseph general secretary of NACCIE said that the issue is not only a GPL one but disclosed that other companies are doing the same.
After months of going back and forth on the wages and salaries negotiations the Guyana power and light company and the union NACCIE are now heading to arbitration. Joseph believes that arbitration is long overdue.
Justice Prem Persaud is the chairman of the panel, the union is represented by Seepaul Narine GAWU general secretary and the company is represented by Gobin Ganga the deputy governor of the bank of Guyana. Among the issues to be resolved is the payment of an annual increment from 2007 to 2011 for those GPL workers who qualify as well as the payments for those entitled to performance increment awards for 2007 to 2010.
