Caribbean Airlines Flight 523 Overshoots Runway Just after 1:30am, Seven Injured
This is a capitol news special report, not very good news to report this morning. As you can see behind me, the front portion of a Caribbean airlines Boeing 737 800 broke off as the aircraft that over shot the runway upon touchdown early this morning.
The flight which came from New York with connecting passengers from Toronto and the Caribbean arrived in heavy fog and rain at the Cheddi Jagan Airport just around 1:30 am. As the pilot landed the aircraft there were several bumps during what many described as a hard landing. The aircraft made its way through the airport’s fence coming to a halt in a grassy area along the roadside. Passengers scampered out the aircraft and said the cabin was filled with smoke. First class had it bad. They could not get any access out but eventually made their way out. The flight had just over 140 persons on board including the crew. Several were injured and rushed to the hospital. Some passengers explained the horror on board flight 523.
The emergency response authorities operated without lights for close to 2 hours. There was also the lack of proper rescue equipment. This calls into question the efficiency of the emergency response system. But the President and a number of his cabinet members were quick to rush to the airport. President Jagdeo he is thankful that there were no deaths.
