US Embassy Gives Guyanese an Insight on how the US Government Works
The US embassy as part of its ongoing efforts to offer Guyanese a glimpse into how various parts of the US government works is hosting several meetings this week with American Professor Dr. David Lublin of the School of Public Affairs, American University who is looking at “Democracy and the Role of Free, Fair, and Transparent Elections in the Nation Building Process.
At a press briefing today, Dr Lublin said while he is now getting to understand Guyana more and would not want to rate this country’s democratic practices he believes that there specific issues that one should focus on as part of the democratic culture. Questioned about the impact of a free press and freedom of information, he explained that in today’s society access to information is something very important.
He was also questioned about shared governance and whether such a political formula could be applicable to the Guyanese society. He said every country is different and as such the realities might be different also.
Asked about some politicians having too much power at their finger tips, the US professor who is also the Mayor of the Washington town of Chevy Chase quoted US comedian Whoppi Goldberg and her thoughts about the importance of voting.
The meetings are being hosted across Guyana.
