The ruling Peoples Progressive party is in the defensive trying to downplay the support the party may have been getting from arrested Guyanese and Queens Businessman Edul Ahmad who is a major supporter of the party and who now operates an upscale hardware store in the PPP’s mirror building at Industrial site.

In a statement last evening the party said that the disgraced realtor who was dragged off a delta flight in handcuffs by the FBI has not made any financial contributions to the PPP/C’s 2011 political campaign nor can he be considered in any way part of the PPP structure or the PPP/C Government.

The party said there have been nasty attempts to link the man to the party. But the same Edul Ahmad who is believed to be a close friend of the President only in April was part of the organizing team for the PPP’s New York introduction of its Presidential Candidate. A meeting which was attended by both President Jagdeo and Presidential Candidate Donald Ramotar.

In fact the invitation to the meeting which was sent out by the Guyana consulate in New York listed the businessman as one of the contact persons for the meeting. Capitol news understands that he was one of the major organizers who provided financial support for the same PPP campaign meeting in New York. And this may not have been the first time he has acted in such a role.

Ahmad who is on a 2.5 million us dollar bond has to wear an electronic monitoring device and was cannot leave the state of NY. The court documents reveal that Ahmad and the several other Guyanese before him were charged under the task force set up by President Obama to investigate financial irregularities. Ed Ahmad was allegedly engaged in schemes to pull in mortgage money from financial institutions through fraudulent means.

In this specific complaint, Ahmad is accused of attempting to defraud Countrywide Home Loans by using straw buyers with questionable credit histories to obtain loans and properties for Ahmad through the scheme. Ahmad shot to prominence in the real estate market just after 1992 and eight years later invested in a Catering business that hosted several Guyana Government and PPP functions and functionaries.
