Jewellery Industry in the Spot Light
The Ministry of Industry and Commerce is looking to work with members of the gold jewellery sector to address the concerns of consumers reportedly being sold substandard jewellery.
Minister, Manniram Prashad met with several representatives of the gold jewellery sector at the Ministry. He noted that the ministry has recognized that consumers are being put at a disadvantage since there are no proper systems for monitoring.
Prashad stated that a consumer affairs bill will soon come into force since it was already presented in the national assembly and has received full support.
The Ministry of Industry and Commerce has teamed up with the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) and the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission with the hope of seeing how customer’s complaints can be reduced.
At the moment only the GNBS has the authority to ensure that gold manufacturers are properly monitored and certified.
