Kwakwani Residents Refuse to Move to Higher Ground
The Civil Defence Commission is expressing concern over resident’s unwillingness to move away from the river banks to more suitable housing and higher ground in Kwakwani Region Ten.
Head of CDC, retired Colonel Chabilall Ramsarup said the area is known for flooding twice a year and residents were given alternative areas to relocate. He noted that the current flood water that is affecting the communities could remain for a few more days.
The Civil Defence Commission has since moved into the affected area offering relief to residents who are trapped in their homes. According to regional officials floodwaters in Kwakwani Region ten have receded by some six inches.
The constant flooding in the various communities in region ten has come under heavy criticism by some sections of society pointing out the government’s failure to implement flood control measures and demonstrate proper disaster preparedness.
