Bids Made to Purchase St Barnabas Church

Several bids have been made for the purchase of the St Barnabas Anglican church building located on Regent Street, less than a week after the sale was first announced.

The Bids range from 200 million Dollars to over half a billion Guyana dollars for the prime spot in one of the busiest shopping areas, next to the Bourda market. Some tenders even went further by offering to pay down as much as 90 percent of the bidding price.

It is the first time that a church is selling one of its properties for commercial proposes. The property is expected to be deconsecrated before it is officially sold.

Lots 97, 98 and a portion of 99 were advertised for sale. On the same plot of land that the church sits is the St. Barnabas Special School which is controlled by the Education Ministry.

The St. Barnabas church was built in 1884 as a place of worship for the Bourda community and sits at the corner of Regent Street and Orange walk Bourda. As time evolved the membership declined significantly since the church was affected by many changes.
