The June Session of the Assizes Opens Today
The murder trial involving wanted fugitive Maxwell Melville aka Lunkie is among the high profile case listed for this session of the Demerara assizes. Lunkie was said to be the trigger man in the death of Marlon Debreu several years ago. He was on remand when he and others managed to escape from the Camp street jail, to date the local law enforcement agencies have been unable to locate him.
The June session of the assizes opened this morning with Justice Winston Patterson taking the salute and inspecting the parade outside the high court at the traditional march past ceremony.
196 cases are scheduled for this session some of which include murder, manslaughter, rape and trafficking and possession of narcotics. More than 30 murder cases are expected to be heard in the session. Justices Winston Patterson and Roxanne George will preside.
The shortage of judges continues to be a major impediment in the judiciary which has resulted in a backlog of cases.
