Lethem Experiencing Extreme Weather Conditions
Lethem residents are bracing for the worst as flood waters continue to inundate the community resulting in damage to several homes and disruption to key services, including electricity and potable water supply.
Already the problems on the ground are challenging as the government moved to set up makeshift shelters and evacuate persons who are trapped in the riveraing area.
Senior government officials and members from the Guyana Red Cross and civil defense are also on the ground accessing the situation.
Updating the media on the situation on the ground Agriculture minister Robert Persaud and minister within the ministry health Dr Berri Ramsoran said that so far they are trying to get food and medical supplies to the residents, the ministers noted that shelters have been set up to accommodate those who are hard hit by the crisis.
The administration is saying that the flooding is as a result of heavy rainfall over the past couple of days. But some residents are still to quantify their losses in terms of household items, and cash crops that were destroyed during the flood.
The ministry of agriculture has deployed its engineers and equipment to the flood hit community to bring relief to those affected.
