AFC Resigns From Security Committee
The Alliance for Change has announced its resignation from the parliamentary committee on security. This move by the opposition party stemmed from the recent police arrest of American Islamic cleric, Akbar Muhammad on suspicion of drugs and terrorism along with two others last Thursday.
The man was since freed with no charges filed against him and is demanding an apology from the Guyana government for his wrongful detention. Party Leader Raphael Trotman said the AFC strongly condemns the arrest of Muhammad and the move is in protest of the current administration’s double standards in managing the security sector.
Trotman stated that the PPP administration could pretend and play games with the lives of persons but the AFC will not only separate itself from such actions but fight against it.
The resignation is expected to be submitted to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ralph Ramkarran. The main opposition party the PNC also issued a statement this week condemning the arrest of the cleric.
