Islam Minister Arrested Under Terrorism Suspicion
Nation of Islam Minister Akbar Muhammad who is believed to be a financial advisor to Nation of Islam Leader, Louis Farrakhan has been arrested in Guyana on terrorism suspicion charges. Muhammad was arrested in his room at the Princess Hotel just after 3:00 this morning by local law enforcement. The Guyana Police Force has confirmed the arrest but has not released any other detail. The Muslim cleric arrived in Guyana just over a week ago as part of a familiarization visit and to meet with local Muslims.
He appeared on HBTV CH 9 during the week on a TV show dedicated to Muslims in Guyana who are affiliated with the Nation of Islam. He was scheduled to host public meetings in a number of towns outside of the capital city of Georgetown. The man contacted the TV station today after his arrest to say that he would not be able to make it to today’s programme.
A spokesman at the US embassy in Georgetown said the embassy became aware of the arrest through local media reports. The embassy would not offer any other comment. Capitol News understands that the man has been visited by officials of the US embassy who advised him to get an attorney. Reports also indicate that a senior US official may have also made contact with the man.
Home affairs minister Clement Rohee this afternoon confirmed the man’s detention. Crime Chief Seelall Persaud has been quoted by the associated press as saying that based on information, the man may be involved in terrorism and drug trafficking. He would offer no additional details. When contacted by capitol news Persaud said he was in a meeting and did not offer any other comment.
The Muslim cleric was expected to travel to linden today for a public meeting. During one of his appearances on the TV programme he spoke about his experiences in Guyana.
A number of persons who appeared to have looked at the man’s TV programme have said that they are surprised with the arrest. They claim that from the man’s utterances on the TV, they cant find any link to the questions now swirling around his presence here.
