Rat Causes Blackout in City
A massive power outage gripped several parts of the city from just after midnight. Areas as far as the west coast and east coast of Demerara were also affected. The power shutdown was triggered by some problems at the kingston power station when a rat made its way into one of the sets and caused some damage.
GPL’s chief executive officer Bharrat Dindyal explained to Capitol News the severity of the problem and how the company was forced to deal with it.
Strange enough the power supply equipment at Kingston are supposed to be rodent proof but someone may have left a door open allowing the rodent to make its way and cause the damage. Insert. While several areas got back power in a few hours. Several other areas remained in the dark as the power company made provisions for students sitting CXC exams.
The back up system was ready to go but had to be done carefully. The CEO explained. Insert. Just yesterday the power company welcomed the arrival of two new generating sets that ate expected to go into commercial use by august. When that is done customers should expect an improved and better service.
