Teachers to Get Better Training Through Improving Teachers Project
The Ministry of Education in collaboration with the World Bank has launched the Guyana Improving Teacher Education Project. The initiative is aimed at advancing the quality and delivery of teacher education. The total project amounts to just over US 5 million Dollars and will be done in three components.
World Bank representative for the Education Sector Manager in Latin America and the Caribbean Region Dr Ching-boon Lee said the project was supported so that the government can improve the current education system.
Education Minister, Shaik Baksh has admitted that enough is not being done when it comes to teacher education and noted that this is an important area. Baksh said the current programs and structure at the Cyril Potter College of Education was restructured in order to improve the standard of teacher education.
Finance Minister, Dr. Ashni Singh said Guyana and the World Bank have shared a good relationship over the years and that it is up to teachers to determine whether the education system progresses or fail. Dr. Singh has urged teachers to take their responsibilities seriously because the future of the next generation is in their hands.
