ERC Still to Define Race and Ethnicity

[bitsontherun nOmO9iLb]
The Ethnic Relations Commission is yet to release a judicial definition of the terms race and ethnicity. The commission has urged that media houses find a way to deal with content that has the potential of promoting race based politics and racial insecurity.

But the Guyana Press Association has made it quite clear to the Ethnic Relations Commission that it first needs to properly define the two words since in local laws there are no clear definitions.

Chairman Juan Edghill said the commission has not made any progress in that direction but is currently carrying out its duties using the conventional definitions of the words.

The ERC has reported that it has a mandate under the racial hostility act and the representation of peoples act to deal with complaints made to the commission. A number of groups have brushed aside the work of the commission and some political groups have even deemed the present commission unconstitutional.
