Ramotar Says Clean but the President Acting Otherwise
As the elections cycle heats up, PPP Presidential Candidate Donald Ramotar is standing firm by President Bharrat Jagdeo. Although Ramotar has given a commitment to have a clean political campaign, the President has been firing off at party conferences throwing barbs at the other presidential candidates and some sections of the media that he may no longer be too fond of.
Today Donald Ramotar called a press conference to talk about the support he has picked up from all 3 county conferences. He said he is humbled by the endorsements but when questioned about the Presidents attacks on the other candidates at those conferences, he said the President would be best to deal with those questions.
And he is also not worried that the President’s behavior on and off the campaign trail could affect his chances of becoming president.
Ramotar has come under criticism himself for not being experienced enough for the position. Though he is a lifelong politician, he has stayed out of government for all 18 years of the ppp administration instead working at the party’s headquarters. He brushed aside concerns about his training in economics, that the president said is important.
Meanwhile the party is still to decide on a Prime Ministerial candidate. The PM candidate would usually come from the civic component but it remains unclear whether the PPP will turn to the civic group for the prime ministerial candidate this time around. Initially Ramotar before becoming the presidential candidate had stated that the two were now one, referring to the PPP and the civic group and that it was not necessary to have the pm candidate from the civic component. He has since changed that position making clear that the party is still to decide.
