Scrap Metal Dealers Protest Against Ban
It has been one week since the Government brought a halt to the scrap metal trade again. The Guyana Metal Recyclers Association on Tuesday sent a letter to the Prime Minister highlighting the concerns of the association with regards to ban on the trade. The association is yet to receive a response.
Representative, Desmond Sears in a recent comment on the matter said when the trade was banned last year the association made several changes to improve the trade.
Sears said March 31 was the last day for all operators in the trade to be registered with the association. Some fifteen exporters and 100 dealers have since been registered with the body.
Dealers and workers were upset that they were not given any notification of the ban which took effect from last Tuesday. Some workers decided to protest at the Office of the Prime Minister for the trade to be resumed. The workers said the trade is their only source of making an honest dollar.
