GTU Calling for Better Security at Schools
Security at schools has always been a major concern to many especially teachers who would have been victims of robberies. The Guyana Teachers union is calling for the Education Ministry to not turn a blind eye to the issue.
GTU believes that the ministry should develop a plan that could see schools having both day and night guards. The General Secretary said the union is very concerned about the safety of teachers.
The Teachers union said the Education Ministry has always held its position that it would cost the ministry a large sum of money to provide every school with 24 hour guards. The General Secretary noted that the union has seen an increase in the number of teachers being attacked at school.
Only last Friday a man armed with a cutlass rushed into a nursery school to commit a robbery. After he did not get what he wanted he then made his escape by jumping over the school fence. There have also been cases where several schools would have been broken into and robbed.
