Flooding In Communities –Underlying Cause Drainage

The issue of flooding in some communities within the city has left some residents in a state of despair even as they would have tried everything possible to address the problem without the assistance of the relevant authorities.

Some of the communities that were heavily under floodwaters today included sections of East and West Ruimvledt, North and South Ruimveldt and Albouystown.

In East Ruimveldt, the situation was so bad that the bottom flats of several residents were inundated and children were kept away from school for the day. While many of the residents have attributed the problem to the improper drainage in the community, it was evident that most if not all the drains and culverts in those communities were clogged with overgrown weeds.

Over in West Ruimveldt, the situation was just as frustrating for the residents there. This elderly woman who lives in the area for well over a decade said it has been years since any one came to clean the drains.

However in other sections of the city, efforts are being made by the authorities to address the problem More than two weeks ago, drainage and irrigation works were seen carried out at the junction of Carmichael and Middle streets to improve the constant flooding in that area.
