Benschop Gets Sued By Police Commander
Police commander of A Division George Vyphuis has sued social and political activist Mark Benschop for 20 million dollars for libel and defamation of character over statements Benschop allegedly made on the guyanaobservernews.org website.
Vyphuis has taken issue over a statement that was attached to a photograph of the two men on the website. Just after the statement and photograph were published the commander had taken the unusual step to issue a press release and disclaimer.
He apparently became even more upset after the website published other statements that he Vyphuis said he had never made.
But Legal sources have told capitol news that the case should be an interesting one since it may be the first time that a lawsuit may have been filed locally against, someone for statements they would have made on the internet. One legal source said the lawsuit might find itself between a rock and a hard place.
Another attorney at law said it is unclear how the lawsuit could move forward especially when issues like jurisdiction and the internet come into play.
While the website may be available here, it could be difficult to prove that it is published and maintained from Guyana and that Benschop was the one who posted the information that the plaintiff has a problem with.
