PNC Saying Head OF State Making Malicious Statements
The Peoples National Congress has briefed the organization of American states on what the party considers malicious statements by the head of state which could ignite racial tensions. The statements the party says were made at the observance of the death anniversary of late President Cheddi Jagan last Sunday.
The OAS’ Deputy Secretary General Albert Ramdin met on Wednesday with the PNC’s Presidential Candidate David Granger and the party’s leader Robert Corbin as well as the general secretary Oscar Clarke. Ramdin was told of the President’s recent outburst with the PNC leader saying that the statements made by the president are provocative and could re-ignite racial conflicts.
Corbin said too that this was not the first occasion that the President used a Public Forum to make what he considered wild accusations, maliciously misinterpret events and mislead the public thereby promoting social instability.
Corbin told the OAS official that sections of the society and specific communities have already complained of racial tensions since the Head of State’s statements at Babu John.
Presidential Candidate David Granger said Jagdeo’s irresponsible and uninformed statements could have serious National consequences after years of relative calm.
The PNC SAID the Deputy Secretary General pointed out that the OAS is always concerned about any statement that may incite racism and social instability, noting that such statements could cause serious problems especially in an election period.
On Sunday at Babu John President Jagdeo made several statements about the PNC and the AFC and the leaders of the two parties. The President called on those gathered to ensure the youths in the community wake up to their past and events that occurred back then.
