Over 80 Of Guyana’a Finest Facing Justice System
The appearance in court yesterday by a policeman charged for rape adds to the long list of members of the Guyana police force who continue to find themselves running afoul of the law. Over the past few years, the police force has seen a huge jump in the number of ranks becoming involved in all types of unlawful activities. The situation has not only grabbed the attention of the Police Force but the Police complaints authority is also paying close attention.
Just last week at the opening of the police officers conference the commissioner of police announced startling figures about police men currently before the courts. Over 80 of Guyana’s finest have found themselves facing the justice system.
The commissioner also said that the force is aware of the problem and has been addressing it. But the same force has been heavily criticized by the police complaints authority and even the home affairs minister for the sloth in which it moves to deal with complaints.
There have been calls for the administration to look into the working conditions and salaries it pays to policemen. Many patrol ranks take home less than 40,000 per month. The government is convinced that police officers are better off now than they were in the past.
