Disabilities Act Finally Launched
The long overdue Persons with Disabilities Act was officially launched on Monday which saw President Bharrat Jagdeo committing financial support towards the disability community. The President believes in order for the Act to be effective there needs to be a stronger commitment on behalf of the government.
Guyana Council of Organization for persons with disabilities, Chairman Leon Walcott said the Act is another step in the direction of removing the barriers prohibiting persons with disabilities from exercising their basic rights.
The National Commission on Disability Chairman stated that while the Act seeks to improve the lives of persons with disability a number of workshops will be done with the various councils on disabilities so they can go out and sensitize others about the Act.
The Act aims to provide certain rights to persons with disabilities while promoting and protecting them from being discriminated against on the basis of their disability.
