Women The Main Focus For Commonwealth This Year
Women are once more the focus since it is believed that they are the most vulnerable in society. Women as agents of change, is this year’s theme as the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association observes Commonwealth day 2011.
Speaker of the National Assembly, Ralph Ramkarran said while significant strides have been made in addressing women’s issues there is still more work that needs to be done especially as it relates to domestic violence.
Ramkarran stated that Guyana has benefited from the commonwealth body significantly and believes that it is a day every citizen should be proud to celebrate.
This year’s Commonwealth activates will commence from March 14 with a tour of the Public building and will end on the 16 with a round table discussion. Commonwealth Day is usually celebrated on the first Monday in March. They are 54 independent member states that make up the commonwealth body.
